TWIN CAM 96B MAKES SOFTAIL A SMOOTHER CRUISER FOR 2007

Milwaukee, Wis. (July 14, 2006) - The Harley-Davidson Softail family of motorcycles continues to set new standards for factory custom design in 2007 by offering a wide range of innovation to its classically styled and authentically designed product line.

All Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycles offer the new 1584cc Twin Cam 96B counter-balanced engine, 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission and Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) as standard equipment for 2007. The Softail family adds the new FXSTC Softail Custom model, while also completely reloading the FLSTF Fat Boy model from top to bottom. The FX Bobtail models continue with the fat, 200mm-wide rear tires and the new engine and transmission increase Softail displacement and torque for a strong and smooth ride, while improving exhaust sound.

“Softail motorcycles have always delivered smooth, modern performance and authentically refined styling keeping the hard tail look at the forefront of the custom motorcycle scene,” said Scott Beck, Harley-Davidson Marketing Platform Director. “For 2007, the Softail family ramps up the performance and technology of a bigger and better engine. Combined with a smooth, easy running 6-speed transmission and electronic fuel injection, it is topped off with distinctive styling elements to deliver an emotional ride.”

The new FXSTC Softail Custom is comfortable and chromed-out with 1960s-inspired style and a number of new features. The classic FLSTF Fat Boy gets pumped up with a bigger engine, wider and bigger tires, chopped fenders, a thicker internally-wired handlebar and other additions. A popular feature on certain Softail models last year, a 200 mm-wide rear tire gives four Softail Bobtail models a bold look for 2007. Mounted on an aluminum disc wheel, the 200mm rear rubber tire appears on the FXSTC Softail Custom, the FXST Softail Standard, the FXSTB Night Train and the FLSTF Fat Boy.

The Softail line is named for the innovative Harley-Davidson Softail chassis. The Softail honors the vintage “hard tail” frame appearance of the 1930s and 1940s, while offering a modern, hidden rear suspension system that includes two horizontal rear shock absorbers mounted under the transmission and suspending the unique triangular Softail swingarm. The result is a truly modern interpretation of classic motorcycle style influenced by Harley-Davidson heritage and customer enthusiasm.

All eight models in the 2007 Softail line-up include the following innovations or options:

  • 1584 cc Twin Cam 96B engine, rigid-mounted in the frame as an integral element of the motorcycles’ low-slung stance. The engine delivers increased overall performance and can be easily upgraded to a 103-inch displacement with a Big Bore kit from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories.

  • The smooth shifting 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission with helical gear design for quieter operation and a taller top gear ratio with lower cruising rpm and reduced engine noise.

  • Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) for clean operation and improved driveability.

  • Clutch lever effort reduced by an additional 10 percent over last year’s improvement of 17 percent for a lighter feel.

  • Hollow front axle for better feel and tracking

  • New speedometer with clock, sixth gear indicator light and brighter LED indicator lights

  • Optional factory-installed Harley-Davidson Smart Security System, featuring new hands-free fob and auto arming/disarming.
