HARLEY-DAVIDSON XL 1200N NIGHTSTER ROCKS ON THE ROAD

ORLANDO, Fla. (January 29, 2007) - Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycles get a burst of adrenaline with the launch of the new XL 1200N Nightster. With a wicked combination of exceptional performance, unique design and a low seat height, the Nightster has a gritty, urban feel offering a sharp ride for the street. The new Sportster model was announced today at the Harley-Davidson Winter Dealer Meeting in Orlando, Fla. Blending a low seat height and mid-mount controls with the powerful torque of the rubber-mounted Evolution V-Twin engine, the XL 1200N Nightster adds another exciting option to the Sportster family.

“The XL 1200N Nightster is a blacked-out street bike that continues a half century of Sportster tradition of innovative, fun and versatile motorcycles,” said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Director of Motorcycle Product Development. “With loads of truly select features and components, the Nightster takes all the enhancements made to the Sportster family in recent years to an entirely different level.”

The distinctive look and feel of the XL 1200N Nightster centers on a low seat height of 25.3 inches that makes it comparable to the XL Sportster 883 Low, an inch lower than the XL Sportster 1200 Low and among the lowest riding of all Harley-Davidson models. Besides enjoying the lower seat height, the Nightster rider goes solo with a one-piece, Sportster classic seat. The mood gets drastically darker on this new Sportster, as the Nightster features a host of black components. Black wheel rims and hubs contrast with chrome spokes, while the front forks and clamp, headlight cover, handlebar, levers, turn signals and air cleaner insert are all finished in black.

The rear belt guard and front fender clamps are also black, but are opened up with a bullet hole pattern. The rear fender is cut back to show more of the rear tire. The back of the Nightster rides without a separate tail light, as that feature is integrated with the rear turn signals. Taking the latest Sportster design for a ride into the past, the Nightster features a side-mounted license plate holder and front fork gaiters. While the side-mount license plate is a street design cue, the fork gaiters are a retro component that helps protect the fork seals from dirt and debris.

The Nightster rides smoothly with a 1200cc Evolution engine, which features a new Medium Gray finish with polished and black treatments. The transmission and airbox cover also sport the new finish. The Evolution engine provides a responsive throttle and high performance, while the integrated transmission has quietly meshing helical cut gears and lightweight dog rings that reduce shift effort.

Like all 2007 Sportsters, the Nightster has Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), reduced clutch lever effort, redesigned gauges, high performance carbon fiber belts and improved front brake lever effort. As part of the original Harley-Davidson hot rod motorcycle family, the Nightster has a design refined from the racetrack to the street that is primed for customized creativity. The Nightster is offered in Vivid Black, as well as four two-tone paint schemes and a unique Harley-Davidson fuel tank graphic. The fuel cap, headlamp trim ring and oil dipstick cover are coated in a new Silver Satin finish.

The XL 1200N Nightster features:

  • Rubber-mounted 1200cc XL Evolution engine
  • Medium Gray powder-coated engine with polished and black treatments
  • Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI)
  • High-compression, high-flow cylinder heads
  • High-performance cams
  • Smooth, quiet transmission
  • Light clutch lever effort
  • 25.3-inch solo seat height
  • Low front and rear suspension
  • Black front forks with gaiters
  • Bullet hole rear belt guard and front fender clamps
  • Black, low rise handlebar with brake and clutch levers, turn signals and air cleaner insert
  • Side-mounted license plate holder (dealer-installed rear mount option)
  • Brake and tail lights integrated with rear turn signals
  • Black mid-mount foot controls
  • Black-rimmed, Laced Steel wheels
  • Chrome staggered shorty slash cut dual exhaust
  • Silver Satin finish fuel cap, headlamp trim ring and oil dipstick cover
  • Optional Smart Security System

I love B&W photos, but I've got to tell you, Harley messed up on this one.... This Sportster rocks in color photography because of the bikes black/grey tones. In color, you see the contrast and the bike REALLY stands out. It gets lost here. See the video at HD.com to notice the difference.

The Harley Davidson Motor Company have the made the right decision to bring out a dark coloured model with a minimal chrome appearance. A very large number of European motorcyclists prefer dark or light coloured bikes and this model will sell well on the other side of the pond. I am interested in this bike.

Both of our local dealers already have these on the floor. The pictures are not half as cool as one sitting in the sunlight in front of the dealer. The wife and I are fighting over who gets to ride it first. The orange/black combo is a killer. My only question is why did they make a "blacked out" bike and then come up with gray engine covers when they already had blacked out engine covers in inventory? It would have looked better with black engine cases and covers.

INTERESTING INFO: I found out at the International Motorcycle Show in Chicago this past weekend that the bike was designed by a 27-year-old working under Willie G. I'll try to update with more pictures shortly...

i grew up around harleys my whole life and i have to say this is honestly the nicest stock sporster i have ever seen. im currently serving in th US Navy over seas in italy. its a sin not to own a harley out here with all the roads that have the most amazing coastal views.i have one question if its possible to answer i would appreciate it. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and i weigh 200lbs do you think this sporster would be good for my first street bike? my e-mail is walkerj@nsa.naples.navy.mil thanks

Re: Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Rocks on the Road [Press Release]    By Kevin Campbell on 2/19/2007
Jeremy... Try before you buy is my recommendation for anyone. Many dealers have rental programs which will allow you to spend a couple of days getting to know a bike before you make the investment. Sportsters are great bikes, but I find them too small for me.

I bought the first Nightster orange and black two tone seen on the West Coast. I've been riding it for nearly two weeks, (when it hasn't been raining), and the bike is truly the most awsome piece on machinery ever. The ride is powerfull, smooth, comfortable and people seem to flock to like flys on sugar. The XL1200N for 2007 was my only choice and I'm exstatic that this bike will hold its value for years to come.

This is a great looking bike, but the scale is wrong. Even for the average size guy, this bike will seem like a 3/4 scale machine. This could've been the "Hellcat" for the masses!

Hey Guys- Im looking for my first Harley.. Im 6'3 230lbs. Do you think the nightster, with forward controls, would be too small for me?

Re: Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Rocks on the Road    By host on 4/5/2007
Dan, I love the looks, but I'm 6'2, 200 lbs and the Sportsters are too small for me. Rent one before you buy it. It's a significant investment that you want to be happy with...

Who wants to drive anymore I just want to ride, this bike is a true break through for Harley, and I thank them for a job well done. Enjoy the ride my friends for it doesn't get better than this.

Picking up a Sil/Blk on Saturday after preordering back in mid March. I have seen in person all but the orange and black. The olive and black does not quite work with the medium engine case, the vivid is fine if you like shiny, the silver/ black continues the contrast feel along with the medium case. I've got forward controls (polished not chrome, No black available) for install before delivery. There are 4 people ready to by mine if for some reason my deal fell through, but they're out of luck... I'm paying cash.

Awesome feedback guys. I took my motorcycle safety class this weekend and walked into the dealership and ordered it. This will be my first bike ever, and I am so excited that it is the Nightster. Looking forward to many enjoyable hours of riding. I'll keep it at the dealership for the 1st two weeks while I get used to the bike and ride it around the backstreets before I venture out to the main roads. Man, I can't wait. Blck on blck. Let me know any good tips for first time riders! FtLaudSingleGuy@gmail.com

Picked up my silver/black Nightster on Sunday. It is a Mothers Day present and my first Harley. This is the slickest bike on the road and it turns heads everywhere I go. The flat paint and blacked-out look give it just the right retro style cool for me.

i have the black on black 1200n and i love it. you can throw it in a curve and it just feeds plus it has plenty of power. i have owned several bikes and this one by far to me is the most comfortable. the only thing it should come with is black engine guards, other than that perfect

I am a new rider and I'm a girl!.... I bought my first bike and of course its a HARLEY! I am really enjoying the Nightster and it is perfect for me. Low to the ground so I am not afraid I will not be able to hold it up. Not as heavy as all the other bikes I tried out! I was wondering...Do you guys think it would look stupid with a windshield on it? Everyone around here says I should get one, but I am looking for other opinions.... Thanks and Have a Great Day!

Re: Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Rocks on the Road    By Soulbizkit on 7/14/2007
Just bought the Silver/Black Nightster, only one at the dealership, bought it straight out of the crate. This is one badass motorcycle, I can't stop riding it, put 500 miles on it in 2 days, rode in the rain and still did not want to stop. Thought about forward controls and new pipes, nah, its perfect the way it came, solo seat and all!!

hey girl rider here, beginner. Saw bike, got off my arss about finally getting a Harley, guess the right one finally came along to make my heart jump, great design, fine finish, timeless lines, urban, yet 1950's Steve Mcqueenish too ( great escape)?
Hubby loved mine so much he bought the last 07 the dealer had, mine is satin black, his is vivid black! Hot looking guy on his Harley Nightster !!! He doesn't have license yet and has put 250 miles on it in 2 days!
I don't have permit yet, but practice and must say bike is a piece of cake to handle for a beginner with no experience of ever sitting on another! Perfect won't get bored with for years!
I want a louder exhuast though! Any comments???? Suggestions???

I just bought the green and black one. I was wondering if anyone found or has saddlebags on theirs? When I went looking I couldn't find any that fit.
BTW female 5'3 106 lbs. I have been riding a Harley trike for a few years, what a difference two wheels make. My trike is harder to handle. But I am having to get used to how easy the nighster is to steer and the gas is a big difference.

Re: Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Rocks on the Road    By scott b. on 7/26/2007
i've had my nightster for a few months now. Its the all black i have about 3500 miles on it . i put forward controls on it ,they're a must. also i put mini apehangers on it, made the ride very confortable and gave the bike a nice old school chopper look. exhaust i put on the new vance and hines slip ons with the s.e. breather kit and the s.e. down load. The bike sounds good but runs pretty lean so u get a little popping, also the bike idles a little high but that can b adjusted. over all its a good setup. S.E. slip ons may be a better choice as they are not as high flowing and you wont run as lean. also the the download and breather are not needed to change the pipes the O2 will automatically adjust for them.

Re: Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Rocks on the Road    By dylan c on 9/15/2007
bought my nightster just barely a month ago and have 1200 miles on it thus far. the forward controls really sets off the lower sidecase showing off a black and silver retro looking 5. being my first harley i thought it was a good choice and the "bob" tail really adds to the "badass" factor of this bike. fast and light... wasnt sure it was a harley the first time i got on it.

Re: Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Rocks on the Road    By Lyle on 9/15/2007
Saw the nightster online in June and felt that finally this was the Harley I was looking for. Since the 70's flat track bikes I had always hoped I could own a street legal Harley that was stripped down and not Chopper geometry. Liked some of the recent Bobbers but I am not willing to own a totally custom bike. This Nightster does it for me, I have owned many classic prodution bikes over the last 35 years and this has completely captured my imagination. I ordered the Olive Black out here in B.C. but must wait till maybe Dec for Delivery. Nice to read Al's ongoing feedback on his ownership. Dec delivery means some cold wet riding but I can't wait for Winter!

Had my black on black "skull" tweaked Nightster for about 4 months. Fun ride (forward controls a must!). I just ordered the mini apes for it and am looking to tweak the pipes.

I went to a HD dealer having never seen a nightster, I was just killing some time. Saw a Blk on Blk with Vance & Hines short shots painted Blk and the Blk screamin eagle / K&N intake, Took it home an hour later. My first Harley. Forward controls, a couple of seats to choose from, quick release windshield, and apes coming up. The COOLEST Sportster ever built. Older HD buffs dont even believe its a HD until they get close and they drool over it!!!!! LONG LIVE COOL!!!!

Every bike needs a little chrome.. forward controls.. nice padded two up seat.. smoked wind screen.. chrome mini sissy bar and luggage rack does make this bike stand out in a crowd. The last item I plan on adding is a set of ISO™ Stirrup passenger pegs and a chrome headlight cover to finish it off from 2orangeharleys web sight.. also revengecycle has many parts for this bike. Besides.. what goes better with black then a little chrome.
I've read articles that claim 110mph is top end for the stock nightster, I rolled mine up to a 115 and backed out of the throttle to let a custom catch up and he had a grin on his face from ear to ear and gave me a thumps up. San Diego freeways can get crazy at times.
Sounds like everyone is enjoying the ride, have fun and watch those right hand turns.. damn near lost my muffler in one.

I love the look of the new bike, but the price tag is rediculous. I can get a used Fat Boy for under $10,000...which is less than the XL 1200N being sold at Orlando Harley.

Looking for a great looking bike that rides rough and has a steep price? Then this is the bike for you. You have to remember, you are paying more for the name than the bike. But that's just my opinion...everyone has one.

I bought my Vivid Black/Mirage Orange Pearl Nightster a month ago. 1,600 miles later I love it as much as I did the day I picked it up. I ordered the bike with the color-matching orange air cleaner cover, black forward controls, and Rush baloney cut slip-ons with 2" baffles. It draws a crowd wherever I go and I've been the subject of so many candid cell phone photos I feel like a celebrity. It has a look and ride similar to a couple vintage Triumphs I owned years ago.....True modern day nostalgia.

owned my nightster for about 2 months now, absolutely LOVE it!!!!!!!!!! I am looking to upgrade to a 2-up seat, and also I would like to put a set of saddlebags on it...Does anyone out here know of anyplace, either web or walk-in that would have either of these items? Thanks again! p.S. remember, only bikers know why a dog hangs his head out of a car window :-)

Hey Everyone

I am seriously considering getting one of these, but not sure if they can handle the distance. I want to do a fair amount of miles and interstate rides with it. Has anyone got any ideas?

cheers

I have had this bike for just over 1,000 miles and find it works great for me. I am 50, had wrist-rockets my whole life, and wanted to mellow out a bit. However, I ain't dead - so now and then I still like to punch it, and maybe scrape some pegs on the corners. This bike is kinda a sport cruiser - It is good at both, but not great at either. I adjusted to the seat and shocks after a couple 100 miles This bike would be a tough ride for anyone over 5 ft 8 inches seems. Forward controls would give more room, I bought'em but haven't tried them yet. Engine is just now settling in and smoothing out. I can see why Harley's are addictive, you really start to become one with the big V-Twin after some time!

I bought my Vivid Black/Mirage Orange Pearl Nightster 10 weeks ago. 2,500 miles later I love it as much as I did the day I picked it up. I ordered the bike with the color-matching orange air cleaner cover, black forward controls and Rush slash down slip-ons with 2" baffles. I’ve just installed Screaming Eagle Stage 1 High-Flow air induction, H-D race tuner, and upgraded to Rush baloney cut slip-ons with 2 ¼" baffles followed-up by a dyno test to fine-tune the bike to ensure maximum performance (81.54 hp and 76.09 ft-lbs. @ 6,500 rpms).

It draws a crowd wherever I go and I've been the subject of so many candid cell phone photos I feel like a celebrity. It has a look and ride similar to a vintage Triumph I owned years ago.....True modern day nostalgia.

Rode mine to sturgis this past summer,
3400 miles in 7 days,
road from dallas to nevis minnesota, then down and over to sturgs,
then down through colorado to dallas

Only advise I would have, is a softer seat would have been nice

Any suggestions for Saddlebags - XL 1200N    By Sandra on 2/23/2008
I just my first Harley, a 2008 1200N Silver Denim. I am wondering if anyone could suggest what type of saddlebags would fit this model bike.

Thanks!

I bought my black Nightster last year. Ordered it from my uncle's dealership in s. cal and rode it back to Utah. I highly recommend that kind of bonding experience with your bike. I'm 5'6" so it fits me perfectly, but taller folks will definitely want forward controls. I've seen one shot with the detachable saddlebags on it, I'm planning on getting those. As for the windshield, try the detachable one Harley sells. But let me know if you find a better saddlebag, I'm interested.

Rode my wifes XL1200N home from the dealership (25 deg outside) Thats how hot this bike is. Dealer customized all satin black, foreward controls, Vance & Hines (LOAD AS F@CK & lovin' it) w/ header wraps, White wall Avon Venoms. If my sportster was this cool, I would never have traded it in! I'm 6' 1" 215# & this bike works well, better than my '75 FXE superglide & Softail Standard.

Just bought the all-black Nightster. I haven't even pinned the throttle back yet and it's already mroe power than I need. I'm 6'1" 200 lbs. and the forward controls help out a lot. Great bike. Great ride.
